new life in a new town

I'm here!!!

Still working on getting furniture, but have found a pretty river walk and am enjoying fellowshipping with the Mennonite church here.

Here are some photos from my walk....on a foggy winter morning...

    1. I think why I like Deloraine so much is that it reminds me of England. I loved England and Tasmania is very similar in parts...especially Deloraine.

  2. I agree it looks beautiful, and my first thoughts were that it looked very English :)

Glad you are all moved, and hopefully soon you will all settled.

    Blessings to you,

    Bean

    1. Hi Bean - I think it will take awhile to get this house feeling like a home, especially with moving from a furnished apartment to an unfurnished house, but I'm getting there...slowly.

I think I will like living here :o)

  3. wish you a ton of happiness in your new home by the river.
Do you have a lots of rain there?
Here it rains all the time and is very cold.(Wimmera in Victoria)
I will be going to Melbourne for a few days(work and Church)
I hope I do not find my home and garden when I come back to
be part of the river .

    1. Hi Wimmera - I'm not sure on the rainfall. I imagine it will be similar to the northwest coast areas and Hobart area. It is not as dry as the midlands area, and not as wet as the west coast. And I am finding it is quite a bit colder than the coastal areas I have lived in. The river here does flood at times. I hope you find your home and garden safe on your return.

The big difference I am noticing is the lack of wind (so far). Stanley, where I moved from, is one of the windiest towns in Tasmania.

  4. We drove through Deloraine during the Christmas holidays and it was very pretty. Ross was also a lovely town and very English. Lynda, I'll have to grill you for Mennonite details sometime :). From what I gather the Nationwide Mennonites (which the community in Deloraine happen to be, I think?) are generally a more conservative branch than a lot of Beachy folk, although each group differs. I'd be interested to know for instance what their take is on musical instruments, use of computers, employment etc, and what expectations they have of people such as yourself who are new to their faith and church community. How nice to have somebody on the inside. :))

    1. Hi Lucy - yes, Ross is very 'english' too, as are many of the midlands towns.

I'm not exactly on the inside yet :o) I'm giving myself 12 months to fellowship with them and decide whether I will join. And I think they would agree that it is wise to take things slowly as it is a completely different lifestyle.

I also don't have all the answers, but yes...they are very conservative (not sure if they are Nationwide or Eastern Mennonites) and I think more conservative than the Beachy. Do you know of the Beachy group in Gympie?

Regarding musical instruments, they do not use them in their church services and I think they are also 'frowned upon' in the home. And of course they do not have TV's and I think newspapers and radio are a bit of a grey area.

I don't know what there official take (they call them guidelines) is on the internet. Many have email, but not web access.

Not sure what you mean by your question on employment.

As to what they expect of me...I guess I'll find out :o)

They are all lovely, godly people and although they have church rules/guidelines, I understand their reasons for upholding them. Otherwise they would be just like all the other churches. And it is their uniqueness and godliness that draws me to them.

If you would like to sent me your email address in a comment here (which I won't publish) I can contact you by email if you would like to discuss it more. I can also give you the email addresses of those who have more of the answers than me!

    1. Thank you Michelle :o)

I'm gradually getting things in order and the place is feeling a bit more 'homey' as I get more furniture.
